AAC refers to all the various methods we use to communicate other than or in addition to spoken words. We all use AAC one way or another through our daily communication without thinking about it. But if you or a loved one is unable to speak, or has difficulty with intelligibility, AAC can be a great multi-modal support.

Your speech therapist will work with you to understand your loved one’s communication abilities and needs. From there, they will help you choose an effective AAC system, and provide training on how to use it. From no tech to high tech AAC options, speech therapy can help.

Developmental disorders are disorders that occur before or just after birth. This can include learning disabilities, cleft lip and cleft palate, selective mutism, developmental delays, and more.

Has your child been diagnosed with a developmental disorder? Or have you noticed they aren’t meeting their expected communication development milestones? If so, our pediatric speech therapy clinic can help. We’ll assess your child’s speech and language abilities, and put together a plan to support their development.

Fluency disorders are a category of speech disorders that affect the rhythm, flow, or fluency of your speech. There are two types – stuttering and cluttering.

Stuttering can look like difficulty getting sounds or words out, prolonging or repeating certain sounds or syllables, overusing interjections, and more. On the other hand, cluttering can look like blending words together, rapid speech rate, or jerky stop-go speech patterns. If you or your child has a stuttering or cluttering disorder, a speech therapist can help.

If you or your child has a language disorder, it will mean difficulty in one or both areas of communication – expression and comprehension. Expression is related to all the different ways you communicate your thoughts and ideas to others. Comprehension is how you understand and interpret language.

Collectively, challenges in these areas are called expressive language disorders and receptive language disorders. These tend to occur together – many people will show a deficit in both areas. A speech-language pathologist (SLP) can help.

When you think of motor skills, you might first think of things like walking, running, or writing. But you have oral motor skills as well. Oral motor skills refer to controlling the muscles of your face, tongue, or larynx. These are the muscles you use to eat, drink, and of course, speak.

A motor speech disorder is an issue with controlling and/or coordinating these muscles when speaking. Specific disorders include dysarthria and apraxia of speech. If your child has a motor speech disorder, a speech-language pathologist can help.

Not everyone’s brain interprets the world in the same way! In the past, our field used to view things like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia as “problems” to be fixed. But these days, we recognize and embrace neurological differences.

At the same time, neurodivergent individuals can demonstrate speech and language challenges. Here at Forte Speech & Language Therapy, we take a neurodiversity affirming approach. By focusing on building upon strengths, we can help you or your child develop effective communication, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills.

There are many different types of neurological conditions. However, they all have one thing in common – they affect your brain, nerves, and/or spinal cord. These include diagnoses like cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, aphasia, and others.

These disorders can have wide ranging effects, including speech and language challenges. If you or a loved one has a neurological disorder that’s impacting their ability to communicate, speech therapy can help.

Spoken words are comprised of speech sounds. Every language has its own collection of speech sounds and rules for how sounds are combined, and English is no different. If you or your child has a speech sound disorder, it’s comprised of challenges with producing clear, intelligible speech.

Speech sound disorders include articulation disorders and phonological disorders. If you or your child has a speech sound disorder, speech therapy can help. Early intervention has been shown to deliver better results, so don’t hesitate to consult with a speech therapist.
